So this weekend went much smoother than I thought it would...
Saturday morning I got up before everyone else and ran 4 miles. Even though I haven't run in over a week, I was still able to keep it under a 10 minute mile pace. At around 9 AM, I went to go my hair cut. Shockingly Jake said he wanted to go with me to get his hair cut too. We usually have a great deal of trouble to get Jake to get his hair cut, so I jumped at his offer. We went into Madison (where we used to live) and walked around. Even though I love our house, I miss the "small town" feeling of Madison. We could walk to get everything. Bagel shop, movie theater, 3 different pizza places, 2 liquor stores, grocery store, and a 100 little specialty stores all within a 4 block radius. So Jake and I parked and started walking around. First stop was the comic book shop. We browsed around, then purchased the latest issues of The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and The Mighty Thor. It is easier to get Jake to sit in one place if he's got a comic book to look at. So he sat well behaved while I got my hair cut and then jumped up and got his hair cut without complaint. Then we stopped by the bagel shop to get something to eat. If we didn't have to be home right away, we would've planted ourselves on a bench and enjoyed our bagels in the sun while watching humankind walk by.
But alas, it was not to be. It was my responsibility to take care of the boys while Claudine hosted a bridal shower for her mom. I felt a little apprehensive of my ability to entertain these two, for 4 hours or so. My confidence was further eroded after Bobby threw up twice in the morning. .. Oh and he had massive diarrhea, so there was that too. Well, we set off in the vague direction of my parent's house. Of course when I called them, they weren't home. From some deep, unused, memory bank, I remembered reading in the paper about a wildly over budget playground finally being completed in my parents town. So we found that and set up camp. My childhood town sure has become yuppified. This is one of those prefab playgrounds but it was immense. There was plenty for them to do. After a couple of hours my parents finally got home so we stopped by and visited them for about an hour and a half. No barf and managable diaper changes. Then the three of us went back home to find the house pretty clear of extraneous females. Both boys were pretty exhuasted, so they went to bed very easily. And then so did I.
Today, Claudine was on call starting at 7 AM. But it didn't matter because Bobby woke up around 5:45 AM and wouldn't go back to sleep. So he and I goofed around for awhile, letting Jake and Claudine sleep. At around 7:30 Claudine went in to round on patients at the hospital. She had one woman in labor with her fouth baby. In the afternoon, I was getting bored and the boys were getting restless so it was back to the park we found yesterday. On the way I called Claudine and caught her in the car on her way to our house. She quickly changed direction and met us at the park. Again, I was struck by how yuppie infested my old town was. Slim, artifical, women in high heels chasing after their children while their chubby, baseball cap-wearing husbands sat around reading the business section of the Sunday paper. All the conversatons I overheard (which I love to do) were just vapid and inane. After we got home in the afternoon, Claudine got call that her patient was fully dilated and ready to push. Jake went along to the hospital and hung out with the interns and nurses while Claudine delivered the baby. When everything was cleaned up and everybody calmed down, she pulled Jake into the room (after asking the parent's permission) to see the new baby. He liked it. So Bobby and I hung out on the couch and watched some baseball (Mets got killed), some gold, some cartoons, and finally an Elmo tape. He was pretty well behaved - still a little out of it from being sick - he just sat on the couch, watched TV and played with a checker set. I'm not saying he was playing checkers, he's only 18 months, he just played around with a checker set.
And that's it.
