This is going to be quick because we're having an air conditioner meltdown and I don't feel like sitting in front of a computer keyboard today. First of all, the two phrases, air conditioner and melt down sound like they should go together, but in this case, they really, really, don't. The Northeast is experiencing a pretty nasty heat wave. Not the worst in recent years, but the combination of the heat and the humidity is having a debilitating effect on one of our air conditioners.
"One of our air conditioners", I heard you ask? Yes, we have two central air conditioner units sitting on the side of our house. For twice the problems and twice the electrical bills! Actually, I think that it is because this house didn't originally have air conditioning when it was built so it was added on later. Then the people who lived here put on two pretty big additions to the house that required more air conditioning. The original unit (meaning the one added on later) couldn't handle it so they installed a second unit. So one unit just services the bedrooms and the other serves the rest of the house. Well, the rest of the house is pretty frickin' hot right now!
This is another one of those times when I really miss my dad. Because I went out to the side of the house to look at the units and one of them had ice on the connector between the freon unit and the hose to the hose. ICE! The kind of ice that forms in and around the freezer that needs defrosting. It was about 100 degrees (f) outside. But I couldn't chip this ice off to save my live (And it was a good thing it didn't come to that). I turned off the air conditioner at the thermostat and by the time I walked back outside to check the thing again, the ice was already starting to fall off. So there is something incredibly inefficient going on in the transfer of the cold stuff between this AC unit and my house. The other AC unit didn't have this condensation problem. That's when it hit me! I'll call my dad! He'll know what this is. He installed the air conditioning in our St. Louis home by himself. And then it hit me again! I can't call him. All that knowledge that I used to count on isn't there anymore. Crap. I guess, I'll have to bring an actual air conditioner guy over to look at the unit(s).
So we'll be spending most of this fourth of July in the pool. Hmmmm, that's not so bad, is it?
